Plan a day of sailing
Call the Middle Caicos Sailing Association in advance and we will set up a model sailboat or the entire model sailboat fleet so you can enjoy a day of sailing in the warm shallow waters of Bambarra Beach. A day of cultural and historic adventure!
Be sure to mark the next Middle Caicos Valentines Day Cup on your Calendar:
Middle Caicos VALENTINE’S DAY CUP
Traditional Turks & Caicos Model Sailboat Races
The model sailboat race day on Bambarra Beach in Middle Caicos, Turks & Caicos Islands is ready for it’s annual event this coming year with a great line up of boats, food and music! So make plans to come and enjoy this wonderful cultural festival.
From the beginnings long ago at the turn of the millennium, with 6 boats and a handful of friends on the beach the Valentines Day Cup has become a national event, beloved by residents and visitors alike. Now, with over 25 boats in the Middle Caicos Sailboat Association fleet, plus over 10 boats coming in with their captains, the races are more serious and skillful!
All sailing enthusiasts are invited to participate in the races. It is fun and easy to learn…although tricky to master!! Boats are available in all classes and we encourage you to get involved in the races.
This event is a totally not for profit event, organized each year by a dedicated committee with several other not for profits organizations taking part. Please join us to support this special day!
IN THE TIMES OF COVID
The Valentines Day committee and volunteers are discussing together how best to keep this traditional TCI sport active and the cultural heritage vibrant. It looks like coping with Covid will continue to dominate everyone’s planning for vacations and social events, and similarly, we are working out new plans. Ideas include smaller events each month, regular maintenance sessions, sailing days with lessons on the beach and pop-up races. Your input is welcome, and we count on your participation, joining in whenever you can.
The annual race event on Bambarra Beach will be more subdued this year and details of the actual race day program will evolve to incorporate the Covid regulations/restrictions as required. But we will be on the beach with the fleet! We may have to encourage reservations for beach picnic spots and comply with social distancing and masks regulations, but we will make it great!
The event will be more focused on sailing the boats, with volunteer instructors for each boat, working with the crew that has signed up. The races will be held as always in three classes with cash prizes. Likely having the band and bar on the beach will not be possible, so plan to come with your “bubble” and really learn how to sail these model sailboats! We hope that take away food from tiki huts will be permitted so the schools can fundraise, and we will keep you posted about it!
Overall, our focus for this year is directly on the model sailboats – maintaining, upgrading and increasing the fleet. To work on integrating model sailboat skills into the community further, we will be having regular workshops at the “Boathouse” in Conch Bar, beside the Seaview Café. With Pastor Gold at the helm of the program, every Thursday the Boathouse will be open for volunteers to come and learn/assist with the fleet maintenance and upgrade. If you are interested to join the maintenance squad of volunteers, sponsor a boat, or to donate toward the fleet maintenance, please contact HEATHER via email, email@example.com. Your support is needed!!
